NZ Ice Fernz beat Australia in Ice Hockey Thriller
History was made at Paradice Botany tonight, as the NZ Women’s Ice Hockey Team beat the Australians 4-3 in a thrilling battle, to achieve their first ever win over Australia at the IIHF International level.
Despite both teams starting the competition with even chances, Australia were slightly favoured, having secured a hard-fought upset victory over the higher ranked Hungarian team on Tuesday.
Playing before a large vocal crowd, the Ice Fernz mission was made harder when a defensive error afforded Australia the early chance to go ahead 1 -0. However New Zealand fought back, with Kiri Langford managing to beat the Australian Goalie with some deft puck handling skills and slot a short-handed goal.
A string of penalties in the second half had the Australian penalty box over flowing, allowing the Ice Fernz to apply pressure and slot a goal from a 5 on 3 powerplay. A second power play goal moments later had the Ice Fernz ahead 3-1. However the tenacity of the Australians shone through, as they slotted two quick goals to tie the game up 3-3.
New Zealand hopes were buoyed by their four goal to Tara Tissink, 10 minutes into the third period. Keenly aware of the thinness of the one goal margin and the intensity of the game, Australia fought back, with the Green and Gold pulling their goalie in the final 60 seconds to try and draw level. However NZ managed to retain possession of the puck in the last 30 seconds and run the clock down, thereby securing a magical first-ever victory over the Australian women at the IIHF level.
History will record the names of this Ice Fernz team. Amongst that list is a 15 year old rookie Goalie named Grace Harrison. Harrison, who debuted for the Ice Fernz on Monday night, has been the anchor in the Ice Fernz defence and has faced the greatest number of shots of all goalies in the tournament with an impressive 90.83% save rate.
The NZ Ice Fernz take on the Hungarian Women’s team tomorrow Friday at Paradice Botany, with the puck dropping at 8.00 pm. Both teams start as even favourites, with the Ice Fernz hoping that the home advantage and crowd support will give them the edge.
