The New Zealand Ice Hockey League (NZIHL) and New Zealand Women’s Ice Hockey League (NZWIHL) are excited to announce the release of the upcoming season schedules, featuring exciting updates that promise to enhance competition and provide more opportunities for teams to showcase their talents.
Both seasons will begin earlier than usual in 2025, giving players in the Ice Blacks and Ice Fernz national teams time to compete in games prior to the respective world championship tournaments.
NZIHL Playoffs Get More Competitive
In a bid to increase the level of competition and make the playoffs even more thrilling, the NZIHL playoffs will now consist of two rounds of semi-finals, creating a more intense and competitive road to the grand-final. With more teams in the hunt for a playoff spot, the new format ensures that the path to hoist the Birgel Cup will be more challenging, and every point in the regular season will count.
“This new playoff format is designed to reward the hard work and consistency of teams throughout the season. With more teams in the mix, we’re looking forward to some thrilling matchups and unpredictable playoffs” said Paris Heyd, NZIHL GM.

NZWIHL Season Extended
On the women’s side, the NZWIHL will see a longer season in 2025, offering teams more opportunities to compete. With teams going from 6 to 12 games in 2025, the extended season will provide players with more ice time to refine their skills and foster growth within the league, elevating the standard of play and adding more games to enjoy for fans.
“We’re excited to see the NZWIHL grow in both depth and duration. This extension not only benefits the teams but also gives fans more opportunities to enjoy high-quality women’s ice hockey. We’re committed to building the sport for both players and supporters” said Kelly Schultz, NZWIHL GM.
