At the 2024 NZIHF AGM, a constitutional remit was unanimously approved, resulting in the Dunedin Ice Hockey Association and Queenstown Ice Hockey Club withdrawing from the Southern Ice Hockey League (SIHL), to instead become direct members of the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation (NZIHF).
Previously, Dunedin and Queenstown, along with the Gore, Alexandra, and Tekapo clubs, formed the SIHL, which collectively held representation within the NZIHF. This structure meant the five clubs shared a single voice at the national level.
With the change, Dunedin and Queenstown now have direct representation on the NZIHF Management Committee, while SIHL continues to represent the Gore, Alexandra, and Tekapo clubs.
All NZIHF member regional associations now hold equal representation and voting power on the NZIHF Management Committee, allocated as follows:
Auckland: 1 vote
Wellington: 1 vote
Canterbury: 1 vote
Dunedin: 1 vote
Queenstown: 1 vote
Southern: 1 vote
NZIHF President Andy Mills hailed the decision as a significant step forward in ensuring equal representation, and that it will continue to strengthen the relationships the NZIHF has with its member clubs, stating: “ice hockey governance is in a great position in New Zealand, with all our member clubs aligned on a shared vision and strategy to grow the sport and govern effectively. This change strengthens relationships and ensures equal representation across the board.”
