News from the President   uptd 9 Jun 07

The International season has ended with the highlight being the Gold Medal win by our Senior Men’s Team, the Ice Blacks in Ireland. This was the result we wanted and sees promotion to Division 2 for 2008. The Women and the U20’s both came away with Bronze Medals from their respective Championships. The Senior Men have slipped one place in the IIHF Ranking to 39th out of 46 Countries and the Women are at 29th out of 33.

Recently New Zealand ice hockey received unprecedented international media coverage. Firstly the Ice Blacks performing the Haka in Ireland was shown on page three of the “The Hockey News”, the world’s biggest ice hockey publication. This week New Zealand ice hockey and the NZIHL gained front page exposure on the NHL website. Both of these articles are on display on this website.

We also had one on-ice Official representing the NZIHF internationally this season at the IIHF Championships. Ryan Cairns from Christchurch was on-ice for the U18 Championships in Hungary. Peter Haxell on a Prime Ministers Scholarship spent the Nth Hemisphere season gaining more experience refereeing in Finland and we are now benefiting from his experience.

The new season is underway in all of the Regions and recently the NZIHL first Rounds were played in Auckland and Dunedin. In Auckland the Swarm had 2 wins and in Dunedin the two South Island Teams came out with a win each, looks like it will be a very competitive season.

Recently I was at the IIHF Congress where the 2008 venues for our Teams were decided.

Senior Men’s Team in Newcastle, Australia, 6 – 13 April 2008. Where they play China, Australia, Serbia, Israel and Mexico.

U20 Team in Belgrade, Serbia, 12 – 20 January 200. Where they play Serbia, Australia, Turkey, Bulgaria and South Africa.

U18 Team in Mexico City, Mexico, 2 8 March 2008. Where they play Serbia, Mexico, Iceland, South Africa and a Qualifier from either Turkey, Bulgaria or Chinese Taipei.

Women’s Team has no venue yet but have South Africa, Romania, Estonia, Iceland and Turkey in their Division.

The NZIHF currently has a preferred supplier agreement with Ice & Inline 2000 Ltd of Auckland and as part of that agreement the Gore Ice Hockey Club recently received Learn to Play Equipment which will be of huge benefit for their program.

Back in February three of our Coaches took part in the IIHF Level 3 Clinic in Australia thanks to a grant from the Olympic Solidarity Fund.

Dunedin hosted the successful Friendship Tournament in March with Teams from Canada, USA, Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand competing. A huge event that went off very well.

Our National Championships this year are being held in Dunedin over the last weekend in August and first weekend of September.

All the best for the upcoming season.

IIHF Tournaments

The following is the list of IIHF competitions NZIHF National Teams will be competing at in the 2005 season. These venues and dates were decided at the recent IIHF Congress in May. The Team lists here also show the current IIHF seeding for our Teams.

Seniors… The Division 2 World Championship, Group A, is to be held in Zagreb, Croatia, where Korea, Croatia, Australia, Bulgaria, New Zealand and Turkey will play from April 10-16 2005.

U20… The Division 3 World Championship is in Mexico City, Mexico where South Africa, Iceland, Mexico, Turkey, Bulgaria and New Zealand will play from January 10-16, 2005.

U18… The Division 3 World Championship is to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria where Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Bulgaria, Israel and whoever qualifies from either Turkey or Bosnia Herzigovina will play from March 7 - 13, 2005.

Women… The Division 4 World Championship will be played in Dunedin New Zealand, from April 1- 4, 2005 where Romania, Korea, New Zealand and Iceland will play.

This will be New Zealands first foray into the Womens World Championship and to be hosting at home a great opportunity to promote the Womens game here in New Zealand.

Nationals 2004

The NZIHF Nationals for 2004 are to be held in Gore from 28th August - 5tth September. Teams from the 3 Regions will be competing in Senior, Senior Non-Checking, Women, Junior A, Junior U18, Midget and Peewee.

Moose Tour 2004

Over recent weeks the Canadian Moose completed their 2004 Tour to New Zealand. This was their 15th Anniversary Tour and they played games in Christchurch, Queenstown and Alexandra. The Moose consisted of 64 players and supporters including a Moose Womens Team. In Christchurch and Queenstown the Moose played a Series of games against the Ice Blacks and the Ice Fernz, the Senior Mens and Womens Teams. The results of these games saw the Mens Series tied and the Womens Series was a win to the Ice Fernz. The games in Queenstown were part of the annual Queenstown Winter Festival.

Game results can be seen on the www.iceblacks.com website

U16 National Team

Currently the NZIHF is looking at options for International competition for this team. In the past they have been involved in the Australian State Championships called the De Fris Cup. That invitation has been withdrawn because the AIHF felt it was disruptive to their State Teams Championship hopes when they had a National team from New Zealand playing in there as well.

Peewee Development Camp

It is the intention to run a Peewee Development Camp in Christchurch in early November. The plan is to have 3 Regional teams of players involved, along with team mangers, coaches and referees all working together under the Development Plans of the IIHF. Costings and other details for this Camp will be distributed at least by the time of the Nationals in Gore.
