Stampede Secure Home Final.
The Southern Stampede will play
its first home final in two
weeks' time after beating the
Canterbury Red Devils in a
double header over the weekend.
The two matches, won by the
Stampede 6-5 and 6-2 on Friday
and Saturday nights
respectively, have taken the
Stampede to an eight-match
winning streak and coach Steve
Reid hopes to take the season's
tally to nine to win the
National Ice Hockey League in
front of a home crowd..

Canterbury Red Devils book NZIHL
final spot
The
Canterbury Red Devils have won
through to the final of the New
Zealand Ice Hockey League but
are yet to confirm if they will
host the event. Five goals from
New Zealand representative Chris
Eaden at the Alpine Ice Arena
ensured the Devils dominated the
Dunedin Thunder 9-4 in the
second leg of a home
double-header last weekend. It
ensured they also retained the
Toa Kauhanga Riri Tio trophy
which is the ice hockey
equivalent of rugby's Ranfurly
Shield for provincial rivalry.

Hockey Coaches impressed with
development of Ice Hockey in NZ
Top Swedish
coaches Björn Pettersson and Ulf
Hall spent three weeks in New
Zealand, coaching players and
running coaching clinics coaches
in the Auckland, Canterbury and
Southern regions. Paul Harrison
had the opportunity to chat with
Ulf Hall before he and Björn
flew home to Sweden, and find
out how the inaugural trip to
New Zealand went.

New Zealand’s newest sporting
prizes.
The five New
Zealand Ice Hockey League
(NZIHL) clubs will compete for

wrap up report.
So the Trans Tasman Champions
League was wrapped up Sunday
night after two days of fun
filled hockey, which gave us a
few surprises as well as the
more common thing people have
become accustomed to, the Ice
winning more trophies.

Thunder struck it lucky with
coach.
Dunedin ice hockey players are
in for a major boost with the
appointment of Janos Kaszala as
the Dunedin Thunder coach.
The 34-year-old former
Hungarian representative said he
was approached at a secondary
schools tournament in Dunedin
last year, and asked if he would
be interested in coaching the
Thunder and running its
development programmes.

DUNEDIN, New Zealand – Dr Barrie
Berkeley had a vision. He wanted
to build an ice rink in Dunedin,
a city in the southern parts of
New Zealand. He was a Canadian
who came to Dunedin to lecture
at the University of Otago
Medical School in the early
1970s.

11 top twenty finishes
First Ever Youth Winter
Olympic Games Come to a close
for New Zealand athletes.
New Zealand’s top winter
youth athletes have finished the
first Youth Olympic Winter Games
with eleven top ten finishes and
a critical insight into elite
level multi-sport event and what
it means to be an Olympic
athlete. Top Kiwi performer Callum
Burns who recorded a fourth
place in ice-hockey skills (14)
led the team into the closing
ceremony that took place after
ten days of world class sporting
competition and cultural and
educational activities.

Hockey skills challenge takes off
INNSBRUCK – For the first time
in Olympic history, a hockey
skills challenge competition was
held as an Olympic medal event.
Players from around the world
competed in the opening
Qualification phase in skills
like skating, stick handling,
puck control, skating agility,
as well as shooting strength and
accuracy in front of a crowd of
621 spectators at the 2012
Winter Youth Olympic Games in
Innsbruck.

The inaugural Youth Olympic
Winter Games will take place in
less than three months’ time and
New Zealand will be well
represented. New Zealand’s first athletes
selected to the 2012 Winter
Youth Olympic Team will be part
of this exciting new event which
will see over 1,000 of the
world's best 14-18 year olds
contest all winter Olympic
sports.
Thirteen of New Zealand’s
finest young winter talent have
been named into the team and a
further two are expected to join
the Team as qualifications
continue until mid-December.
Among the athletes named are
Olivia Thomson (biathlon), David
Weyer (curling), Eleanor
Adviento (curling), Kelsi Heath
(curling) Luke Steele (curling),
Callum Burns (ice hockey),
Libby-Jean Hay (ice hockey),

(Australia) shoots, and scores
It will be
standing room only at the
Melbourne Icehouse
for the
Australian Ice Hockey
League Goodall Cup
finals this weekend. Not a big
deal, you might say, in a venue
that holds only 1000 seats.
But until
two years ago, to watch the
Melbourne Ice battle Newcastle,
Sydney and Adelaide teams for
the national title, you would
have been travelling to a grungy
suburban outpost to sit with
maybe a couple of hundred
diehards.

strong Australian team completed
a clean sweep of the Winter

clashes.
The 2010
league champions have pushed
their record for this season to
four wins and two losses,
