NZIHF Coach Accreditation

The NZIHF conducts a three level National Coaching Accreditation Program based on IIHF Coaching Courses.

NZIHF Basic Coaching Course

The NZIHF Basic Coaching Course and is the first degree of accreditation a coach can receive from the NZIHF. The course is a more practical course with the assessment coming in the form of planning and implementing a practice plan on ice with a group of children. In 2010 the Federation intends for all active Club coaches to have completed, at minimum, the Basic Coaching Course. In 2011, it will be required that all Regional Rep Team coaches in New Zealand will need to have completed, at minimum, the IIHF Level I course.

This Basic Coaching Course will run for about 8 hours over two days. That will mean three to five hours of practical activities in a classroom followed by a practice planning session.

This will be followed by and on-ice session for the coaches to implement their plan for a group of children/players. After that a final meeting will be held to give feedback and feed forward to the coaches. There will then be some time to share other resources and drills to close out the course.

In the classroom, the course covers the very basics in coaching as far leadership responsibilities, learning & teaching and planning & organisation. This will include parts on teaching skills based trainings, progressing from simple to more complicated when teaching skills (in hockey terms- teaching from technical to tactical to game like in drill progression). We will focus on the idea of Small Area Games, as it is by far the best way to develop ‘hockey sense’ in our players. This will lead into how to actually plan a practice to meet the needs of their team.

On-ice coaches will deliver a training as a team of coaches focusing on a fundamental skill in the game of hockey. We will focus on instruction time, activity time vs. non activity time, utilisation/usage of ice, ways to split the ice and teaching in stations, use of a ‘head coach’ for the day etc.

Coaches will walk away from the course with a better understanding of how to plan a more effective practice session as well as a bank of resources to help them in the daily coaching.

NZIHF Level I Coaching Course

The NZIHF Level 1 Coaching Course is the second degree of accreditation a coach can receive from the NZIHF. The course is a more in depth theoretical course designed to expand on the topics discussed in the Basic Coaching Course as well as add more technical skills components, team dynamic components, athlete safely and protection and rules emphasis.

In 2011 the Federation intends for all active Regional Rep Team Coaches to have completed and achieved, at minimum, the Level 1 Coaching Course. To qualify for the Level 1 course, coaches will need to have obtained the Basic Level qualification in a previous calendar year and be 16 years of age or older.

This Level I Course is made up of 12 hours of classroom time, and two hours of on-ice time. It will be lead by NZIHF National Coaching Coordinator, Jeff Bonazzo.

A written exam is aimed at assessing underpinning knowledge regarding roles of the coach and safety issues. A short written exam, comprising 15 questions is given to candidates at the completion of the face-to-face training program. This is a “take home” exam, which is to be returned within four (4) weeks of completion of the Level I course. An 80% pass mark is required at achieve the accreditation.

In the classroom, the course covers the basics in coaching as far leadership responsibilities, teaching methods, practice planning and organisation as well as team, game and bench management. This will also include sections on technical skills such as skating, puck control and checking. This should lead onto better meeting the needs of their team.

On-ice, coaches will be taught specific technical skills and drills and will be required to successfully complete all activities as part of a practical skating assessment.

Coaches will walk away from the course with a better understanding of how to plan a more effective practice session as well as a bank of resources to help them in the daily coaching.

NZIHF Level II Coaching Course

The NZIHF Level II Coaching Course is the third degree of accreditation a coach can receive from the NZIHF. The course is a more in-depth theoretical course designed to expand on the topics discussed in the Level I as well as add more technical skills components, team dynamic components, tactical components both defensively and offensively, goal tending, year planning and athlete self esteem.

In 2012 the Federation intends for all active National Team Coaches to have completed and achieved, at minimum, the Level II Coaching Course. To qualify for the Level II course, coaches will need to have obtained the Level I qualification in a previous calendar year.

This Level II Course is made up of 18 hours of classroom time over three days, and two hours of on-ice time. It will be lead by NZIHF National Coaching Coordinator.

The Level II written exam is aimed at assessing underpinning knowledge regarding roles of the coach, communication with parents, player development, yearly planning, technical and tactical knowledge. A written exam, comprising 8 pages, is given to candidates at the completion of the face-to-face training program. This is a “take home” exam, which is to be returned within four (4) weeks of completion of the Level II course. An 80% pass mark is required. Candidates may re-take the exam as many times as necessary to achieve the mark.

In the classroom, the course covers the basics in coaching as far leadership responsibilities, learning & teaching as well as methods for planning a practice and how practices can be organised, game and bench management. This will include sections on technical skills such as skating, puck control and checking. This will lead onto better meeting the needs of their team.

On-ice, coaches will be taught specific technical and tactical skills and drills. This is aimed at assessing the candidate’s practical ability for the progressions of Individual and Team Tactics. An assessment of the coaches skating ability is also assessed in this session.

Coaches will walk away from the course with a better understanding of how to plan a more effective practice session as well as a bank of resources to help them in the daily and yearly coaching practice.
